Wasps Nests - What Are They?

Do you have a wasps nest in or around your home?

Wasp’s nests are a real problem at this time of the year. Our leading technician at Accurate Pest Control Management, Gary Wilkinson, has been called out numerous times already to deal with wasps nests. Dealing with the nests early on increases the chance of the colony being wiped out completely with just one treatment. This year has been notorious for rapid, early nest growth, the image at the side shows a nest Gary dealt with last week.

Wasps form their nests using paper-like substance created using a mixture of chewed up wood pulp and saliva which then dries. This material looks delicate, but is surprisingly tough and protects the colony well. The wasps source the wood pulp from places like trees, telegraph poles and even discarded cardboard boxes! They usually start to build their nests at the beginning of spring and continue to expand this nest as the colony grows. The nest reaches it’s maximum size late in the summer and at this point (depending on the species) up to 5,000 wasps can live in the colony.

Wasp’s nests are usually found in dry places that have easy access to the outdoors. As a result they normally end up in locations close to, or within, our own homes such as trees, sheds, roof spaces, attics, wall cavities, and holes in the ground.

Wasps can be a nuisance in and around home or commercial properties. They can carry disease and contaminate food, stings are painful and can sometimes cause anaphylaxis. Treatment for nests provided by Accurate Pest Control Management is an insecticidal powder administered to the entrance point or directly into nest, we can then return at a later date to remove the nest once the colony has died.
