The House Mouse, Mus Musculus, can be a source of Salmonella and Listeria which can cause food poisoning. Mice eat many food stuffs and often build their nests in homes, barns , sheds other out buildings and roof spaces near sources of food.
Like other rodents mice must gnaw constantly to keep their incisor teeth worn down. Mice can cause damage to electrical wiring which causes risk of fire. and they may also gnaw through water and gas pipes, packaging and woodwork. They often use cloth and paper for nest building and can cause significant damage to anywhere these materials are stored.
There is a legal obligation under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to keep premises rodent free, or, if rodents pose a threat to health or property, to report infestations to the local authority.
