Spiders Over Winter

Lots of other animals seek shelter, warmth, and food over the winter months, spiders are the same. Well- not exactly the same. Spiders are cold-blooded and therefore don’t require the warmth so much, but they still need shelter from harsh weather conditions and plenty of food to eat.

If there are no houses around for them to hide in spiders will often seek refuge in rotting logs, leaf piles, and holes in sheltered ground where it’s unlikely to flood. Spiders are very intelligent animals, they instinctively know when it’s time to seek shelter and where it’s safe to hide.

Spiders tend to lay their eggs over autumn meaning they hatch throughout the winter. The actual eggs are held within a sac made from loosely woven silk (the same kind they use to make their web) and are usually a white or cream colour. Their egg sacs can be found in sheltered places like the underside of leaves, tree branches or burrows. They may also be found in the spiders web itself, under floorboards, the eaves of roofs and in sheds/outbuildings.

Other insects like moths will also create a silk like sac to hold their eggs in, and so it is important to get a professional out in order to establish what kind of pest you’re dealing with.

Despite the fact spiders try to help by eating other household pests like flies many people struggle this time of year as the spiders move inside. Arachnophobia is a common phobia affecting 3.5 to 6.1 percent of the global population and around 18% of the British population. The symptoms can vary from showing slight anxiety to complete panic attacks. Thankfully however, most of the 650 species of spider found in the UK (there are 35,000 species of spider throughout the world) are completely harmless. Because of this irrational fear many people choose to have the spiders removed from their home by a professional pest controller.

Some spiders are capable of biting humans and their venom can cause swelling and allergic reaction. Occasionally more exotic species of spider are found in homes and businesses. Most commonly these may be escaped pets or those that have accidentally hitched a ride in goods transported from other countries such as boxes of bananas.

Here at APC Management we exterminate spiders using a low-level insecticide and one treatment is usually enough. If you have spiders in your home and need them gone don’t hesitate to contact us for same or next day service.
